Victorian, c.1880
An elegant Victorian French Jet longchain. The continuous row of faceted beads catch the light beautifully, each individually knotted with black thread. A versatile length of 152cm, it can be worn as a long single-strand or doubled on itself and worn as a two-row necklace.
The demand for jet jewellery increased immensely when, after Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria entered a long period of mourning, during which time only jet jewellery was allowed to be worn at court. The people followed court fashion and observed the etiquette of wearing black mourning jewellery. Victorian French jet, made from glass, was originally produced to imitate natural jet and soon became popular for its glittery quality.
